Free Country is an outerwear brand that believes in quality, style, and value.
Free Country is an outerwear brand that creates high quality clothing that’s accessible to everyone. Founded in 1990, the brand sells its jackets, activewear, and swimwear nationwide at various department stores and is known for its combination of fashion and function at a great price.
Barrel was tasked with helping Free Country revamp its e-commerce website ahead of the 2017 holiday season. With less than four months to design, build, test, and launch the website, we worked quickly with the Free Country team to get design mockups approved and to plan product content migration. The website, developed on Shopify Plus, started to take shape less than a month into the project as we prototyped various features and began setting up the site architecture.
We developed a system of flexible content modules that enabled the Free Country team to feature various collections and capsules based on seasonality, styles, and use cases. The homepage was also built to accommodate flexible ordering of different modules, making it easy to test out new layouts and to prominently highlight and feature certain products.
We built out a robust filtering experience to help users easily explore and drill down into various product attributes in order to find the right product.
With a vast range of products requiring different description and detail needs, we developed an adaptable product detail page that could easily fit the needs of any given product. Whether the product needs two detail callouts and a video or just simply a brief text description, the Free Country team can use the PDP template to display as much or as little content without worrying about the page looking too crowded or incomplete.
One challenge that needed to be tackled was a way to handle the large amount of categories and sub-categories. This was accomplished by utilizing an expansive dropdown menu as well as landing pages that allow users to browse products easily within each category.
