Barrel's Director of Strategy and Design Director hosted a live optimization session deep diving a brand who submitted their site for review, including a roadmap of fixes to implement before BFCM.
A Shopify Migration for Kirk's Family of Natural Brands
Kirk's Family of Natural Brands brings together three distinct soap and body care brands, each serving a different customer but all operating on the same aging WordPress and WooCommerce infrastructure. Barrel migrated all three to Shopify, replacing a fragile patchwork of plugins and third-party tools with a stable, scalable platform the Kirk's team can manage themselves. All three brands launched creating a stronger foundation for growth across customers, operations, and retail discovery.
That foundation had become fragile. Conflicting plugins, security incidents, broken customer accounts, and unclear ownership across systems made day-to-day management difficult and risky. Customers were getting locked out of their accounts and never receiving password resets, and the team had to route nearly every change through an outside developer.
Kirk’s wanted to keep each brand on its own domain and operate the three sites independently, so we built three separate Shopify stores. We started with Kirk’s, the largest brand, using a theme framework closely aligned with its existing site while making targeted design improvements along the way.
Using Matrixify, we migrated products, collections, and page content, set up redirects from the old WooCommerce URLs, and submitted updated sitemaps so search visibility carried over. To protect against data loss on Shopify, we put an automated backup solution in place.
Once the first store was migrated and themed, we replicated the framework for Grandpa’s Soap and SOF Body Care, adapting each to its existing branding, colors, and typography. The shared system kept each brand visually distinct while making all three sites faster to manage and easier to evolve.
Checkout moved onto Shopify Payments with a faster flow and modern payment options, removing the edge-case tax and payment issues the team had been working around on the old site.
We maintained Kirk's existing fulfillment workflow through their Celigo Connector integration, so orders continue to flow from the storefront to the ERP and out to the warehouse without disruption. We also kept the store locator the team already used, MapMyStore, so retail discovery carried over unchanged.
As heritage brands with generations of history behind them, storytelling was central to the migration. We rebuilt key storytelling templates around each brand’s family history, ingredient philosophy, and philanthropic work, making these stories easier to discover and giving their legacy a more prominent place in the digital experience.
Broken customer accounts made a reliable account experience a launch priority. Customers now have native Shopify accounts with order history, package tracking, and passwordless login via email. Rather than migrate a messy legacy database, the team started fresh, inviting existing customers across all three brands to activate new accounts at launch, creating a cleaner experience and healthier customer base.
Impact
The move to Shopify reset Kirk's digital foundation. All three brands now run on a stable, secure, low-maintenance platform that the internal team can update quickly, with the flexibility to add capabilities like subscriptions, loyalty, and even a fourth brand down the line without re-engineering from scratch.
