Launching a Subscription-First Wellness Brand Powered by Word of Mouth
Plainspeak is a new women's wellness brand using clinically proven ingredients explained plainly. Founded by the team behind Goldilocks, a fractional CMO consultancy, the brand launched with a single product: Strength Water, a powdered lemonade mix formulated for women 35+. Barrel partnered with Plainspeak to bring the brand to market, driving brand awareness, accelerating subscription growth, and building the referral infrastructure that powers its long-term growth.
Plainspeak's entire growth model runs on referral, with no paid acquisition, no retail at launch. Every customer receives unique codes to share with friends, unlocking free samples. With the website as their only sales channel, the experience had to establish credibility, guide a skeptical consumer from curiosity to conversion, and make the referral handoff feel like a gift. Plainspeak needed a partner who could own strategy, design, and engineering end-to-end.
