Shopify's Latest Collections Update: What It Means for CPG Catalogs

The collections overhaul announced at Shopify's DotDev developer conference on July 21 is not an incremental platform update. Shopify's Head of Partnerships, Atlee Clark, called it the biggest update to collections in ten years, and for CPG brands managing complex product lines, that is not an exaggeration.

Barrel's CEO, Lucas Ballasy, and Director of AI & Solutions, Nick Meyer, attended the keynote and walked away with a clear takeaway: this update solves real, longstanding merchandising problems for brands with multipacks, bundles, flavor variants, and seasonal SKUs. Here is what changed.

Collections 2.0

For years, Shopify collections have been a blunt tool. You could group products by tag or type, but nuanced merchandising, like showing only certain variants of a product, excluding specific SKUs from a promotional collection, or nesting one collection inside another, required workarounds or custom development.

The new collections system removes most of those workarounds. Merchants can now pull from multiple data sources into a single collection, nest collections inside each other, apply exclusion controls, and build variant-only collections that surface a specific flavor, size, or pack count without pulling in the entire product line. Shopify also introduced a new extension point that lets app developers supply products into collections directly, opening the door for more sophisticated merchandising apps built specifically for this new structure.

Variant-Level Publishing & Discount Stacking

Two other updates worth noting are already live: variant-level publishing and discount stacking. Variant-level publishing lets merchants control which specific variants appear on which sales channels, rather than publishing an entire product as a single unit. Discount stacking allows multiple discounts to apply to the same order, which matters for CPG brands running layered promotions, such as a subscription discount combined with a seasonal sale.

Both updates reduce the custom development historically needed to run promotions the way CPG brands think about pricing: by variant, by channel, and by stackable offer.

Inventory Ledger

On the inventory side, Shopify is moving to a double-sided ledger, meaning every single inventory movement is now tracked as it happens, not reconstructed after the fact. For brands managing multiple warehouses, 3PLs, or retail partners, this level of tracking accuracy matters when reconciling stock across systems.

Shopify also previewed inventory bins, coming soon, which will let merchants model front-of-house and back-of-house inventory separately. That is a meaningful shift for CPG brands using a hybrid fulfillment model, where product sold on the sales floor and product held in a stockroom or fulfillment center need to be tracked differently but stay connected to the same source of truth.

Fulfillment Flexibility

Split shipping and ship-and-carry-out have already shipped, and ship-and-pick-up is now in testing, with a target of being ready for the 2026 holiday season. If your brand relies on a fulfillment app or a custom integration, take note: Shopify is requiring all app developers to support multiple fulfillments per order before the holidays hit. If you rely on any third-party fulfillment tooling, it is worth confirming with your provider now that they are on track to meet that requirement, well before the holiday rush makes any gaps costly.

The Events API

Finally, Shopify introduced an Events API designed to replace one of the most common frustrations with the old webhook system. Instead of subscribing to broad webhook categories and filtering out the noise, merchants and developers can now subscribe only to the specific events they care about and define the exact shape of the payload they receive. Product and customer events are live now, with orders, collections, and inventory events rolling out as of the keynote.

What This Means for Your Brand

None of these updates are flashy the way an AI demo is, but they solve problems CPG brands deal with every day: too many SKUs, promotions that do not stack the way you need them to, and inventory that is hard to trust across systems. If your team has been living with workarounds for any of these issues, this update is worth a real look at what it would take to migrate.
