Barrel partners with CPG brands to elevate their online presence and drive growth through e-commerce, website optimization, email, SEO, and content strategy. As a globally distributed team, we are united by a mission to help clients succeed through thoughtful, customer-centric solutions. Our goal is to create experiences that resonate, add value, and build lasting connections with their communities.
The Role
Barrel is building toward an operating model where client relationships are deep, delivery is predictable, and growth comes from accounts we already own. This role sits at the center of that model. The Director of Client Engagement owns the full client experience from relationship to execution, bringing account management and project delivery under unified leadership so clients feel one consistent, accountable team from kickoff through renewal.
Responsibilities
- Own the health of the client portfolio: retention, renewals, risk identification, and escalation management.
- Lead the AM team, setting direction on account plans, quarterly business reviews, relationship depth, and growth identification.
- Lead the PM team, setting delivery standards across schedule adherence, scope management, QA, and project margin.
- Own resourcing decisions for the AM and PM functions: capacity allocation, FT vs contractor mix, and surge planning.
- Run the weekly delivery and accounts meetings, ensuring both are disciplined and decision-driving.
- Maintain visibility into project financials and retainer burn, flagging risks before they become client or margin problems.
- Partner with the Director of AI and Solutions on technical scope, change requests, and delivery approach for complex engagements.
- Develop AM and PM capability through consistent coaching, clear performance expectations, and use of the skills and rubric frameworks in place.
- Hold the line on escalations, client sentiment, and account-level commercial decisions without needing executive intervention.
Skills
- Treats retention and margin as equally important outcomes, not in tension with each other.
- Proactive by default: surfaces risks early, communicates clearly, and does not wait to be
asked. - Comfortable holding a client relationship at the executive level while staying close to what is happening at the project level.
- Develops people earlier in their careers without doing the work for them.
Experience
- Has led both account management and project delivery, and understands what each function requires.
- Has worked in an agency environment and understands the pace, the client expectations, and the financial model.
Compensation
Salary range for this fully remote position is $150k to $200k, depending on experience and location.
