Barrel partners with CPG brands to elevate their online presence and drive growth through e-commerce, website optimization, email, SEO, and content strategy. As a globally distributed team, we are united by a mission to help clients succeed through thoughtful, customer-centric solutions. Our goal is to create experiences that resonate, add value, and build lasting connections with their communities.
The Role
We are looking for a detail-obsessed QA / Data Entry Specialist to join our distributed team in a freelance capacity and help us ship polished, accurate client websites.
The QA / Data Entry Specialist partners with our project teams to test new and existing web products and to populate and verify site content and product data. You will own manual testing across projects, from functional and cross-device testing through launch verification, and handle the content and data entry work that gets sites ready for QA, UAT, and launch. This role sits alongside our AI-assisted development workflow: you will use AI tools to speed up content population and data transformation, and you are responsible for verifying everything before it ships.
Responsibilities
- Perform manual testing of websites and web applications, including functional, usability, visual comparison against approved designs (e.g., Figma), proofreading, and cross-browser/cross-device testing
- Write clear, reproducible bug reports and document tickets in tools like Jira and Marker.io; verify fixes and perform regression testing ahead of releases
- Populate site content and product data in Shopify and other CMS platforms, including pages, products, metafields, and metaobjects, from client-provided sources
- Support content and data migrations: enter, clean, and transform data, and verify migrated content against the source post-migration
- Perform accessibility checks (keyboard/TAB navigation, focus states, alt text, color contrast) and performance spot checks (e.g., Lighthouse)
- Run launch checklists, participate in go-live sessions, and monitor for post-launch issues
- Leverage AI tools for content population, data transformation, and test documentation where appropriate, reviewing and verifying all output before release
- Create, maintain, and improve QA documentation, checklists, and process standards
- Estimate effort for testing and content tasks and communicate progress, blockers, and risks to project teams
Skills
- Strong understanding of manual QA practices: functional, regression, exploratory, and risk-based testing
- Exceptional attention to detail with an eye for design and layout discrepancies; ability to think through edge cases and varied user scenarios
- Experience with bug tracking and testing tools such as Jira, Marker.io, BrowserStack
- Working knowledge of HTML/CSS sufficient to enter and adjust content confidently
- Strong spreadsheet skills (Google Sheets, Excel) for data cleanup, imports, and verification
- Familiarity with Shopify and/or other CMS platforms (e.g., WordPress); understanding of e-commerce content structures is a plus
- Experience using AI tools to accelerate repetitive work, paired with the judgment to verify results
- Strong written communication and documentation skills; excellent organizational and time management skills across simultaneous projects
Experience
- 2–4 years of experience in QA, content operations, or website data entry, ideally for e-commerce or content-heavy sites
- Prior experience working within a design and/or digital agency is a plus
- Familiarity with current browsers and mobile devices
- Must love bugs.
Compensation
$14-$20/hour. Salary range for this contract position is dependent on experience, location, and mutually agreed schedule.
