Lead Magnets, Quizzes, and Gated Content: Smarter List Growth for CPG Brands

A generic "15% off" popup grows your audience list, but it doesn’t tell you anything about who's actually joining it. If you want subscribers who convert during Black Friday/Cyber Monday (BFCM), the incentive to sign-up needs to be clear, exclusive, and tied to something tangible. Here are the acquisition tactics we see working for CPG brands right now.

Lead Magnets With Payoff

"Sign up to save 15%" works, but doesn’t build long-term engagement. "Join the waitlist for early access" or "get VIP-only deals" gives a subscriber a specific reason to hand over their contact information, and it sets the tone for a more engaged relationship from the start.

Gated Content and Quizzes That Double as Data

A quiz doesn't just drive signups. It gives you owned, zero-party data about preferences and purchase intent that you can use to personalize onboarding and, later, your BFCM offer strategy. The goal is to use that data to personalize to the individual, not the group.

Referral Campaigns With a BFCM Twist

Letting existing customers bring in friends, in exchange for early access, bonus discounts, or free gifts, doubles both value and trust. It also brings in new subscribers who arrive with a built-in reason to trust your brand. For Plainspeak, we designed the site experience around a referral loop, making it easy for customers to share the brand with friends and track the value of their referrals. Rather than relying on traditional social marketing, the experience was built to support growth through trusted recommendations and group chat conversations.

Build Dedicated Landing Pages, Not Product Page Redirects

Sending list-growth traffic straight to a product page wastes the opportunity. A dedicated landing page built to capture email and SMS, and to set clear expectations for what subscribers get in return, converts far better than a generic redirect.

A Quiz or Lead Magnet Is Only as Strong as the Page Behind It

Gated content and quizzes ask more of a shopper than a simple popup, which means the landing page has to work harder to justify that ask. If the page is slow, unclear, or hard to navigate on mobile, even a well-designed quiz will underperform.

That's the kind of detail Val Geisler, our Director of Strategy, and Christine Carforo, our Director of Design, dig into during our live user experience (UX) teardowns ahead of the BFCM code freeze. Submit your site for consideration and the chance to win one of five Nintendo Switch 2s. Non-finalists remain eligible for a discounted UX Audit and BFCM Roadmap.

Submissions close September 16th. Submit your site for a teardown (placeholder URL — swap in the live landing page link before publishing)
